"Collectively, these stories are a feat of black magic conjured by a master wordsmith and storyteller intimate with both the dark side and the resiliency of humanity."

The Deepening Shade edition by Jake Hinkson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Jake Hinkson is a wizard. It isn’t the words he uses, though the words he picks are generally the right words for whatever he is trying to communicate. It isn’t his plots; sometimes next to nothing actually happens. It is his ability to hit you, at the end of a story, with a cumulative moral impact, that never slips into moralizing, that recalls the work of an author like Flannery O’Connor.

I won’t go through the stories one-by-one, except to say there isn’t a weak one in the bunch. A couple of times, I felt I could see the end coming before it got there, and still felt like I was socked in the gut when it arrived. The sensation is like watching an avalanche heading towards a small town. You may know exactly what is about to happen, but it still hurts your heart and soul to see it.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that his version of neo-noir deals with damaged people doing damaged or damaging things, naturally, and usually bad things happen to them as well, in the process. But Hinkson’s writing has the feel of inevitability, the true meaning of karma being a chain of cause and effect that is, ultimately, inescapable. No matter how badly life has treated these people in his tales, it is never justified that they do what they do, nor is it merely condemned, as in a cheap moral at the end of a fairy tale. Instead, he shows you that choices are being made all the time, that certain times come where we confront our ultimate destiny and that it is we, ourselves, who choose what that destiny will be.

A few of the stories don’t have this. They have no consequences shown for the choices made by the characters. He just served us slicesof broken lives. And those remind us: the wreckage of humanity is already a potential within us all. Any of these characters could be us, the readers, “but not for the grace of God,” as many of Hinkson’s characters might say.

If you like neo-noir, or even classic noir or heavyweight literary fiction, give this book a try. It’s fairly short and carries more impact within its pages than many books twice its size.

Jake Hinkson is a wizard and his magic terrifies me, but I can’t look away as he peels away the layers of goodness and righteousness that hide many a brutal or brutalized soul.

The Deepening Shade edition by Jake Hinkson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

A dark brooding collection of short stories that play out like little movies in your mind, a book filled with wounded characters and twisted circumstances.
Great collection of stories here. Devoured the entire book on a flight -- though they're billed as crime stories (from a crime publisher), they felt more like 'human' stories to me.

Heartily recommended.
The Deepening Shade is an outstanding collection of new and previously-published short stories by Jake Hinkson. And wow, this is an amazing collection. It comes right on the heels of my favorite novel from 2014, Hinkson’s own The Big Ugly. In The Deepening Shade, Hinkson proves once again that he is no lightweight when it comes to writing compelling crime fiction.

Thematically these stories are heavy. Each one delivers what feels like a kick to the soul. Each will leave you thinking about them long after you have finished. But despite the heavy themes, the pages flip by quickly. These stories are just so engaging and entertaining.

What’s inside? You get 15 short stories, and there are no throw-aways. This is the greatest hits collection of greatest hits collections. Every story is solid. Once started, I guarantee you will not be able to put them down. You get a stripper with a sister problem, a cop with a moral crisis, two criminals debating theology as they flee with their loot, and so much more.

I predict this one will rank as one of the most important works in the Crime/Noir genre to hit the shelves ever. It also has the potential to transcend the genre. Hinkson has a way of challenging our simple moral systems—whether it be religion, criminal law, or accepted family order—and show where they are lacking. Our simple systems do not measure up to the complexity that the human condition presents. And it is this that makes the book not only entertaining, but one that you will ponder long after finishing. This is one that will affect you in such a way that you will turn to it often. It’s just that good.

If you’ve read anything by Jake Hinkson, then you already know you just have to have this one. If you have not read Hinkson yet, this is a great place to start. Even if you’ve already read some of the stories contained in this volume, there is much to be found in those you have not.

I rank this as one of the very best short story collections from a single author that I’ve ever read (I’d put it on the shelf next to Franz Kafka and Flannery O’Conner).

And it’s exciting to see the ongoing quality we are getting from All Due Respect Books as well, with this being one of the best so far. And if you are keeping up with ADR’s releases, you know that is saying a lot.

I cannot recommend this one strongly enough. Get the Deepening Shade. You won’t regret it.
Jake's first book, "Hell on church street" blew me away. I awaited his following books and they did not dissapoint. When I heard this collection was coming I snapped it up and devoured it in two nights. If you like noir , this is for you. But these stories that seem almost simple and straight forward on the surface resonate with the force of an undeground explosion. All fifteen of these tales are presented like an iceberg. The surface tale is only an intro; the aftertaste that lingers long in the mind is where the power of the words exerts its magic. I can't overstate the subtle power that pervades every story. This is a hell of a way to start off the reading new year.
I'd heard good stuff about Jake Hinkson for awhile. After finally sitting down to read this collection I painfully have to say it was a little disappointing. The writing is great and Hinkson is terrific at giving his characters a distinct voice. Unfortunately these stories suffer from lackluster endings and are sometimes just flat out boring. It won't stop me from picking up more of his work but I expected these to have a little more, I don't know, wow factor, I guess.
